In memoriam: Dr. Donna Short McBride
1953-2023
After a brief battle with cancer, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, The MacMillan Institute lost a dear friend and amazing colleague, Dr. Donna McBride. A master history teacher, Dr. McBride helped create the nationally recognized History/English department with Dr. Russ at Trinity Christian Academy in the 1980s before returning to school for her terminal degree. She later served as Upper School Head under Dr. Russ but returned to the History/English department to teach at the end of her formal career. A MacMillan Institute Senior History Consultant, Dr. McBride was an educator with more than forty years’ experience teaching and in administration in both public and private schools at the secondary and university levels. She held lifetime teaching certifications in history and Spanish in the state of Texas, and degrees in history, Spanish, literary studies, and the humanities. Dr. McBride has been published in more than 40 national academic conferences and was known for her dynamic presentations. During her career, Dr. McBride was recognized as a Coolidge Fellow by the Association for Religion and Intellectual Life from Harvard University and the Episcopal Divinity School and was awarded a Dedman College Fellowship by SMU to study at MIT. Dr. McBride lectured in the Summer Seminars and delivered compelling presentations “On the Epic Nature of the American Founding.”
A celebration of life service will be held for Dr. McBride at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Kessler Park United Methodist Church, 1215 Turner Ave., Dallas, Texas 75208.
Sacrament
Arrayed as she arrived,
nevermind the color; the
veil in place,
and slowly, slowly the processional
with benedictions conferred,
the veil’s removed—
history and future
all united in eternal now:
at once and forever
flawless,
elegant
graceful
movement, lingering,
by lips confirmed, for
uncovering mystery and
wonders—
our timeless love,
our inseparable selves.
